Karen Darke Explores Design Frontiers with Record Breaking Speed

Karen has never been one to let limits define her. Her journey has always been about testing boundaries, both within herself and in the world around her. This time, the challenge was unlike any she had faced before. She climbed into a sleek cycle capsule known as ARION8, a vehicle built for speed, precision and performance. Shaped like an egg and engineered by the University of Liverpool’s Velocipede Team, it became the vessel through which Karen would chase history.

Partnering with Cycling UK member Ken Talbot, Karen set her sights on the World Human Powered Speed Challenge. Karen Darke MBE, a Paralympian who won gold at Rio 2016 for Team GB, returned to compete with ARION8, aiming to beat her existing world record.

She first set the female hand cycle land speed record in Nevada in 2018 at 46.54 mph, a record that still stands today. Together, they shattered expectations. Ken broke the male hand cycle land speed record, while Karen propelled herself into the record books with a staggering 46.05 mph. This set a new women’s world record that was 17 mph faster than the previous one.

This time, September 2025 in ARION8 and with a different team of Liverpool University mechanical engineering students behind the design, she set herself an even bigger challenge to become the first female hand cyclist in history to reach 50 mph.

For Karen, the numbers are only part of the story. What truly matters is the journey. The countless hours of preparation, the focus required inside the ARION velocipedes, and the intrigue of breaking through the barriers of doubt and fear. It is a reminder that courage begins when comfort ends, and that learning is optimal when we try new things.
